Restore Ban on Funding of Elective Abortions in D.C.12/10/2009
On December 8, a House-Senate Conference Committee reported the Conference Report on the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2010 (H. R. 3288). This bill will serve as the vehicle for passing six of seven remaining Fiscal Year 2010 appropriations bills. However, H.R. 3288 reverses a longstanding ban on the funding of elective abortions in the District of Columbia. Already on December 10, the House voted to approve the Conference Report, 221-yes, 202-no. Twenty-eight Democrats joined in the “no” vote. The Senate is expected to take up this measure shortly. Please urge your Senators to vote “no” on the passage of H.R. 3288 so that the measure can be returned to committee to restore the policy. On December 2, 35 Senators sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), stating that policies restricting the funding or promoting of elective abortion must be retained in an omnibus appropriations bill. As a general rule, amendments are not allowed on Conference Reports, only up or down votes on the bill. A “no” vote sends the bill back to committee for correction. Please act immediately! Thanks!
